Where Does That Trail Go?
Seminole County, Florida, just north of the Orlando theme parks, is home to great natural beauty, much of which can be seen up close from 60 miles of hiking and biking trails, including the Cross Seminole Trail. This 22-mile-long scenic trail is one of the County’s Showcase Trails and also is part of the Florida National Scenic Trail that stretches from the panhandle to the Everglades.
The Cross Seminole Trail runs from Oviedo to Winter Springs, winding through beautiful undeveloped land in Seminole County. Every month about 10,000 outdoor enthusiasts enjoy this award-winning paved recreational trail that meanders through old growth forests and pristine wetlands vibrant with animal and plant life.
Ayres Associates helped to improve the connectivity of the trail by designing the crossing over busy US 17-92. The General Hutchison Pedestrian Bridge connects Big Tree Park with the rest of the trail. The bridge design required a lot of deep thinking and attention to detail. For example, our engineers used 3D computer modeling to come up with a reverse S-shape for the bridge that complements the curvy nature of the trail. The bridge abutments were painted to match a tree theme. We’re proud of this bridge – it won a Best of the Best national award from McGraw-Hill Construction in 2008.
Farther along the trail you will find the family-friendly Greenwood Lakes Park; Spring Hammock Preserve, which offers an off-road wilderness experience; and Lake Jesup, where you can take a walk through cypress forests on the boardwalk.
