USH 63 (Larsen Road to CTH M) Rehabilitation
« Return to Project SearchThis project involved the mill and overlay of approximately 9.4 miles of USH 63 from Larsen Road to CTH M. The project is in Sawyer and Bayfield Counties and goes through the towns of Seeley and Cable. Existing curb and gutter were replaced in Seeley and Cable, and a storm sewer system was replaced in Seeley to improve drainage. The existing roadway was evaluated for roadside hazards such as slopes steeper than a 3:1. Ayres worked with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) to determine the best course of action to flatten slopes or protect the slopes with beam guard.
The project included a “road diet,” a type of road reconfiguration in which lanes are reduced, in both communities. The existing four-lane section in these locations was revised to a two-lane section with a two-way left-turn lane (TWLTL) to improve safety for vehicles making left turns.
Ayres and WisDOT inspected the existing pipes to determine which needed repair/replacement and which could remain in place. The pipes that were replaced were reviewed hydraulically to compare the pre- and post-construction backwater elevations.
Ayres provided the environmental document; design study report; encroachment report; final plans; and plans, specifications, and estimates documents.
WisDOT Northwest Region selected this project to represent the Best in Region in the 2020 Transportation Improvement Conference awards.
