US 51 (Stoughton Road) Rehabilitation
« Return to Project SearchThe Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Southwest Region, retained Ayres to prepare plans and specifications for the replacement of the southbound lanes of US 51 (Stoughton Road) in the City of Madison to replace the deteriorated pavement.
Improvements at two intersections included revising turn lane lengths, replacing traffic signals, and upgrading pedestrian accommodations. Safety improvements included widening shoulders, installing permanent signing, and modifying crosswalks. Minor patching of the northbound pavement and minor adjustments to the storm sewer system were also required.
A traffic analysis was performed to determine potential modifications to the intersections and any capacity improvement needs. A survey was completed for pedestrian traffic that crosses the corridor to access the Madison Area Technical College buildings adjacent to the highway. The results were used to determine the extent of needed modifications to the existing pedestrian facilities. The project was completed on an accelerated schedule, with design services completed in approximately seven months.
