Racine 7th Street Streetscape and Roundabout

« Return to Project Search

Our team provided several streetscape design concepts for the reconstruction of 7th Street in downtown Racine. The area includes portions of 6th Street and Washington Street where they converge on the east side of City Hall.

Tasks included assisting the consulting engineer in the design of a central feature for the roundabout at the intersection of 6th, 7th, and Washington Streets to improve traffic flow and create a pedestrian friendly environment around City Hall.

The roundabout features raised center plantings. The surrounding area includes low stone walls with “Downtown Racine” mounted to a wall and backlit for nighttime readability. Tall light towers, internally lighted and constructed of aluminum in an open framed configuration add interest to the roundabout. A relocated clock tower and a small seating plaza are featured on the east end of the project.

Amenities for the streetscape include well defined pedestrian crosswalks with count-down pedestrian signals, special pavements, a green wall along Racine’s Safety Building, benches, trash receptacles, planters, on-street bicycle facilities, and large tree grates to accommodate large street trees.

This project won a 2014 Engineering Excellence Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Wisconsin.
