Old Kings Road Reconstruction

« Return to Project Search

The City of Palm Coast retained Ayres to complete the final design for reconstruction of 6.2 miles of Old Kings Road to expand it from a two-lane rural section to a four-lane median-divided urban section. The design included roadway, bridge, drainage, permitting, signing and pavement marking, signalization, right-of-way mapping, design survey, geotechnical, public involvement, land acquisition coordination, and extensive coordination with landowners in a special taxing district.

After the design was 90% complete, the taxing district and the City realized the project’s cost would have to be reduced. Ayres then provided a value engineering study. Working closely with landowners, our team developed plans to use joint-use ponds and easements in which landowners have agreed to donate the required right-of-way, thus saving approximately $11 million.

Intersection improvements include turn lanes, mast arm traffic signals, signing and pavement markings, geometric changes, drainage collection improvements, and handicap ramps. Utility work included electricity transmission and distribution systems, municipal water/sewer/reclaim system adjustments and improvements, and communications utility systems.
