Menasha Third Street Bridge Replacement

The City of Menasha hired Ayres to design the replacement of the Third Street bridge over the Lake Winnebago Slough on an accelerated schedule, along with reconstruction of the bridge approaches.
This project involved replacing a single-span concrete deck girder bridge approximately 0.6 mile east of Third Street’s junction with STH 114. The previous structure was approximately 35 feet long with vertical concrete abutments. The bridge clear opening was about 30 feet long with a clear roadway width of 20 feet.
The replacement structure is a 36-foot-long slab bridge with a 22-foot-wide roadway, 6.5-foot-wide sidewalks, and a Texas railing. Three separate construction stages were required to maintain traffic during construction and involved temporary shoring. Sidewalk was extended from Jefferson Park across the new structure.
Ayres worked closely with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the City of Menasha on mitigating impacts to Jefferson Park. Right-of-way was required from Jefferson Park, and since this park had used LAWCON funds for improvements, Section 4(f) and Section 6f documents were required.
A public information meeting was held to discuss impacts and construction time lines, with sensitivity to the fact that this bridge is the only access point for approximately 50 property owners. Ayres worked closely with the City and a local artist on aesthetic treatment alternatives for the new structure.
Construction was completed in 2016.
