Madison Beltline Bridge Painting
« Return to Project SearchThe Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) selected Ayres to perform construction observation services for the cleaning and painting of the structural steel girders on four bridges along the Madison Beltline corridor. Bridges included eastbound and westbound USH 12 over Park Street, Rimrock Road over USH 12, and USH 12 over the Capital City Trail and Wisconsin & Southern Railroad.
The Rimrock Road bridge required night work to mitigate traffic issues that would have been caused by daytime lane closures.
Inspections of contractors’ work were completed after each step of the process, including SSPC-SP1 cleaning; preparation of steel to SSPC-SP10 standards (steel shot blast to nearly white steel); and application of a three-coat paint system consisting of a zinc primer, epoxy intermediate layer, and polyurethane finish coat. Additional coordination involved working with WisDOT’s Bureau of Structures to have cover plate ends inspected, arranging for the disposal of lead paint dust, and working with the State Traffic Operations Center to provide advanced warning of potential backups on message boards. Other duties included traffic control monitoring, weekly progress meetings, materials monitoring, and pay estimates.
