Pinellas County Joe's Creek Pedestrian Bridge Design
« Return to Project SearchPinellas County hired Ayres to provide design, detailing, and permitting efforts to develop a pedestrian bridge over Joe’s Creek, part of the Phase 4 Greenway Park project in the County’s continuing efforts to provide greenspace and recreational areas for residents and visitors in the Lealman Community area. This project closed the trail loop in Greenway Park.
Ayres evaluated alternatives for the structure, including a prefabricated Continental weathering steel truss bridge and a combination of timber and concrete spans that also included prefabricated bridge segments. The project included developing a concept evaluation report, final design, permitting, and bidding and construction phase assistance. The project proceeded with a 180-foot-long, single-span weathering steel truss bridge that fully spanned Joe’s Creek and did not encroach on the floodway, such that minimal permitting was required and agency approval was received with quick turnaround.
The project was developed in two stages due to grant money restrictions. The steel truss was initially constructed and delivered to the site for Stage 1. Stage 2 included the design and detailing of the remaining supporting end bent structures as well as the trail connections. The trail sections were 770 linear feet of asphalt paved trail for Segment B and 243 linear feet of asphalt trail at the bridge site for Segment A.
