Jackson County Courthouse Addition

Ayres designed a new two-story addition to the Jackson County Courthouse totaling approximately 9,500 square feet. The first floor houses a second branch circuit courtroom and related court functions. The second floor houses other county offices, including a 911 dispatch center. The addition also includes a new, safer means of securely transferring prisoners between the jail and the new courtroom. Portions of the existing building were remodeled to provide reconfigured office space and a single security checkpoint area that serves the new and existing courtroom and court-related offices.
Key challenges Ayres addressed included designing the addition to fit a site where space was limited by nearby buildings, utilities, and a steeply sloped site. Other key issues included providing separation of the public from court personnel, jurors, and prisoners, as well as phasing the project to make sure the existing courts could remain operational during construction.
