J-Turn Design for Brown CTH VV
« Return to Project SearchThe Wisconsin Department of Transportation, Northeast Region, retained Ayres to design a new intersection between STH 29/STH 32 and CTH VV in Brown County that includes designing J-turns to control left-turn movements from CTH VV and through traffic on CTH VV crossing STH 29/STH 32.
J-turns reduce conflict points and the number and severity of crashes in at-grade intersections by preventing left-turn and straight movements from the secondary roadway. Instead traffic making these movements is required to turn right onto the primary highway and then make a modified U-turn at a median crossover to travel in the desired direction on the main highway or to turn onto the secondary roadway to continue on that roadway.
This project is among the first 12 J-turns designed for Wisconsin intersections. The J-turn configuration is an interim safety measure until funding becomes available for construction of a diamond interchange at a later date.
