I-39 Bridges over US 51
« Return to Project SearchThe Wisconsin Department of Transportation retained Ayres to design the rehabilitation of the bridges that carry I-39 over US 51 north of Madison. The northbound and southbound bridge decks and strip seal expansion joints were replaced while maintaining three lanes of traffic on the interstate. The bridges were also widened by adding beams to the tapered bridge deck to square up the bridge and allow for three lanes of traffic to be maintained during construction. Ayres developed a complex traffic control plan for this project.
Tasks included providing a Type 3 TMP; environmental documentation and permitting; agency and utility coordination; survey; traffic signal design for an adjacent exit ramp; traffic analysis for maintaining flow during construction; lighting design on US 51; structure design; and plans, specifications, and estimates.
