Graham Swamp Recreation Trail and Trailheads
« Return to Project SearchDespite many project challenges, the City of Palm Coast now has a 2.3-mile multi-use trail, trailheads, and parking facilities along Graham Swamp. The City retained Ayres to design the facilities, coordinate permitting, and prepare construction plans and specifications.
Study and design elements had to comply with Florida Department of Transportation requirements. The project required close coordination with FDOT, the St. Johns River Water Management District, and the Flagler County Parks Department. The original scope called for a 9.6-mile trail; funding shortages required that the project be shortened, and alternate routes were investigated. The Ayres team dedicated considerable effort coordinating among stakeholders to clinch a trail layout acceptable to all. We then called on additional Ayres staff to push final design, permitting, and right-of-way acquisition through in a compressed time frame so the City would not lose funding.
The trail ranges from 6 to 8 feet wide and features elevated boardwalk through wetland areas. The trail crosses two streams on prefabricated truss style bridges.
