Douglas CTH M over Branch Tamarack River
« Return to Project SearchThe Douglas County Highway Department retained Ayres to design the realignment of CTH M and the replacement of a bridge over the Tamarack River. The road has several substandard curves, and closing the road during construction would have resulted in a 20-plus-mile detour. Several alternative alignments were studied to improve the roadway while also allowing the existing bridge to remain open to traffic during construction.
Because of the realignment, the project required extensive coordination with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and utility companies. The 1,200-foot-long project included raising the grade as much as 12 feet and shifting the roadway as much as 90 feet to improve the substandard roadway. A new prestressed concrete girder bridge was built approximately 70 feet upstream from the old structure. Special construction staging considerations were needed to maintain traffic on the existing road and bridge during construction.
Services included survey; hydraulics; alignment studies; environmental documentation; public involvement; preliminary bridge and roadway plans; right-of-way; and final bridge and roadway plans, specifications, and estimates.
