Courtney Campbell Multiuse Trail Bridge

« Return to Project Search

This Courtney Campbell Multiuse Trail Bridge design-build project is a 3,258-foot-long bridge and 3.9-mile multi-use trail along Courtney Campbell Causeway from the Pinellas/Hillsborough County Line to approximately one-half mile west of the west entrance of Ben T. Davis Beach. The 16-foot clear width of the multi-use-trail accommodates a range of users, such as pedestrians, bicyclists, and in-line skaters.

Ayres began designing the bridge for the Florida Department of Transportation, District 7, in 2012. Since its September 2013 opening, the bridge has been well-received by the community and praised for improving public safety. Ayres’ bridge design was named a Grand Award winner in the 2014 Florida Institute of Consulting Engineers (FICE) Engineering Excellence Awards, and the project received a 2014 Engineering Excellence National Recognition Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies.

The 0.67-mile-long bridge runs adjacent to the busy Causeway. At more than 45 feet above the water, it is the only high-level pedestrian bridge in Florida. Ayres also designed new seawalls, shore protection, an access road, stormwater treatment, and parking. The design and construction of the structure addressed the sensitive marine environment and the challenging variability in soil profiles and bedrock layers in which it is founded.
