Clairemont Avenue Pedestrian Bridge Rehabilitation

« Return to Project Search

Many of the thousands of students attending Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, must cross a busy six-lane highway at least once during the school day. A pedestrian overpass carries them safely over traffic as they move from one portion of campus to another.

Rehabilitation of the highway provided an opportunity to rehabilitate the pedestrian overpass and improve traffic access to the College’s parking areas. The College retained Ayres to provide design plans and construction observation. The project required close coordination with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and its consultants and contractors on the highway project. Ayres’ project needed to be completed between May 15 and August 25 to be ready for the start of the fall semester, and the accelerated schedule presented challenges.

The project included structural inspection, survey, design of alternative deck-forming systems, design of a new expansion joint, painting, treatment of removed lead-based paint, approach sidewalk, railing retrofit, and relocation of fiber optic lines. The bridge’s glass enclosure system, along with lighting and ventilation equipment, was removed and rehabilitated. Ayres prepared specifications addressing traffic control and coordinated the rehabilitation and traffic control with the Clairemont Avenue project.
