Business 53 Rehabilitation and Reconstruction

« Return to Project Search

The Village of Lake Hallie chose Ayres to design the rehabilitation and reconstruction of about 2 miles of Business 53 from Melby Street to STH 124. The project included public meetings, traffic analysis, survey, a Phase 1 environmental site assessment (ESA), preparation of an opinion of probable costs, and construction observation.

No changes to existing horizontal and vertical alignments were required on this generally flat, straight corridor to meet current design criteria for a divided urban roadway. The existing two lanes in each direction totaled 24 feet wide plus 3- and 8-foot paved shoulders, and no width changes were necessary. Existing culverts were replaced, matching current sizes.

A new section of 20th Avenue was designed between South Prairie View Road and 118th Street. South Prairie View Road parallels Business 53, running just east of the highway. The new section of 20th Avenue extends east from South Prairie View Road. Three Business 53 intersections also were analyzed for roundabout vs. signal control, and signal controls were the chosen alternative.

The asphalt pavement structure was designed using the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s WISPAVE software. Concrete pavement also was considered, but asphalt was the chosen alternative.
