"Matt has been a mentor to me on so many levels of government and community development. He has so much knowledge about what I do every day, and I am comforted to know that he is a valued resource just a phone call or email away. Small rural communities are his passion, and he will individualize every project to do what is best to influence progress for the town or organization."Angie Cue

Based in our Cheyenne, Wyoming, office, I manage our planning, landscape architecture, and environmental efforts in the West and provide planning services on projects nationwide. I served for seven years as the City of Cheyenne's planning director and bring 15+ years of local government experience. My enthusiasm for vibrant community development sharpens the focus of Ayres' work on brownfield redevelopment, transportation planning, urban park and recreation planning, and landscape architecture.
My peers have noted my eye for innovation. Project accolades include the American Planning Association’s Daniel Burnham Award, which is the highest award given for a comprehensive plan. In 2020 my team was recognized with the Governor's Award for Best of Place for the Windsor Mill project in Windsor, Colorado. As contract staff, I lead a team that manages the Downtown Development Authority in Windsor.
I've demonstrated success in leveraging grant funding to build vision and motivate investment, as evidenced in the West Edge brownfields revitalization project in Cheyenne. To date, the project has attracted over $100 million in reinvestment in this emerging district that is driving the rebirth of downtown Cheyenne. I have spoken on downtown redevelopment topics at state, regional, and national conferences. I've completed extensive work for the Colorado Department of Local Affairs, providing strategic planning as well as the notable Pickaxe Project, which has generated communications strategies for two dozen Colorado Main Street communities.
Public service is important to me. I serve on the Wyoming Main Street Advisory Board and am an emeritus member of the Western Planning Resources Board of Directors.
