Cheyenne Frontier Days Traffic Study

« Return to Project Search

Cheyenne Frontier Days (CFD) is called the world’s largest outdoor rodeo and Western celebration. Every year more than 200,000 people come to Cheyenne to watch rodeo professionals compete for over $1 million in cash and prizes over the 10-day festival. On any given day Cheyenne has a population of about 64,000, so the influx of CFD visitors inevitably causes traffic issues.

The Cheyenne Metropolitan Planning Organization hired Ayres to complete a traffic study to address traffic congestion and parking concerns during Frontier Days. The study addressed short-term improvements and outlines plans to address future traffic and parking planning as CFD moves toward the vision outlined in its recently adopted Master Plan. The study included data collection, aerial photography of parking areas, and attendee interviews related to the park-and-ride system and pedestrian congestion at key locations.

Short-term improvements implemented for the July 2018 event included traffic circulation modifications in the park-and-ride lot to ease congestion at peak times. Green-light time was increased at a traffic signal, some lane configurations were modified, and coordination was improved among all event stakeholders.
