4th Street Sidewalk and Curb Repair

The City of St. Petersburg, Florida, included considerations for preserving the historic character of the 4th Street corridor in its master planning. The City retained Ayres for engineering services for needed sidewalk and median modifications.

Since 4th Street’s construction in 1925, milling and resurfacing projects had reduced the curb face from its original 6-inch reveal to less than 2 inches. Ayres helped the City raise and salvage the historic granite curb to provide sufficient curb height and maintain the corridor’s historic character. That led to the need for reconstruction of several sections of sidewalk.

The City plans to enhance the corridor by providing median treatments to the beginning and end limits to allow for landscape opportunities and other decorative improvements. Several signalized intersections will be improved, including 22nd Street and 29th Street to provide enhanced pedestrian facilities and upgraded signal equipment.
